I see a lot of talk in here about getting cheap bike prices and that this bike costs more or less than this brand bike.

but which bikes are the cheapest AFTER you purchase it? I have always heard that KTM and Husky parts are very expensive but may last longer. whereas jap bikes cost less initially, parts are less but break down faster.

whats your experience?

Yamaha would be my pick. There bikes are rock solid, and OEM parts are the cheapest. I have a Yamaha, and a Suzuki , and the Suzuki OEM parts are almost double Yamaha's prices.

I agree. Not only is Yamaha probably the most reliable bike out there, parts are much cheaper than the others. Especially KTM and husky. No way will I ever pay $50 a piece for fork oil deals and $45 a piece for dust seals.

When I get a Husky 350 and throw a muffler and "ergonomic stuff" on it and roost 4,000 miles of Baia on it...No Mods, No Chain, No Motor stuff...

And all the cool kids go and buy brand "X" & buy $4,000 of crap for it...from lights to pipes to rewound electric crap and a decent gas tank...and the stock chain, sprockets, pegs, chain-guide, tires, WHEELS, bars ...etc., etc., etc. are a joke?

I just laugh....

When it comes to Moto, I'll say this: a Factory Edition is the BEST BUY in MX...as long as your dealer isn't a Douche. Same goes for ANY Husky.

I have never seen anywhere that says Japanese OEM parts breakdown faster. But generally for anything, euro parts are more expensive. Honda and Yamaha have always been pretty cheap for me.

I'd say Yamaha and Honda for good quality parts, made in Japan and at good prices. In the Japanese manufactures, Suzuki must be the least value.
It's a load of crap about Japanese parts being low quality and not lasting compared to euro parts. Especially if you compare them with Honda and Yamaha.

That's good. I guess my message is consistent....

Btw, I've got a KXF that I love; but, it's got $1K kitted forks (PSFs by PC), a revalved shock (KYB by PC), the stock chain, rear sprocket and chain-guide survived only 1 ride, stock pegs are TERRIBLE...etc.
Also, when you're talking 2016...there's not much difference between ANY of the 450s, price-wise, at this time.

I'm jus' sayin'...

My son in law has a 2014 crf250, purchased it brand new, rides 1 to 5 times per month and in a year and a half has replaced 1 fork seal!

My 2013 kxf450 has been pretty flawless as well!

C'mon bro. The drive train survived one ride??? This is the BS people read and unfortunately believe. I've been racing my KXF since April this year (although I use an x-ring chain) With 55 hours of cross country on the bike the sprockets and chain guide are hanging in there just fine. Chain guide shows wear but that is normal wear and tear. I've never gave the stock footpegs a single thought. It has stock suspension, and when I let people ride it they often ask what I've done to it. 'Nothing' I say.
I've owned a couple of KTM's and they are nothing special (I still have one) and they wear out parts just as consistently as any Japanese motorcycle I've owned.

Unless you buy the KTM 450 that I had, in which they are the most expensive priced to buy and spend more on parts then all 12 of your other 450s combined. My KTM ( a 13 450 SXF) was a complete pile of dog doo.

FAQs

Why are bikes so expensive right now? ›

The materials, overhead, and factory labour costs combine to dictate the FOB price. Whether premium or more mid-range, the labour cost to make a carbon frame is “nearly identical,” Gitelis tells us. It's the material costs that will differ, while overhead is extrapolated from the other two.

What is the typical markup on bicycles? ›

A high margin would be 40-45% (66-80% markup), low end would be around 20% margin (25% markup) in my experience (as an employee). so for a $500 bike a 40% margin is $200, $300 original cost to the shop. In markup terms, a $500 bike that costs $300 wholesale is 200/300 = 66% markup.

What is the most valuable part of a bike? ›

After the frame, the wheels are the next most expensive part on the bike, yet most bike companies spec wheels that are below the level of the rest of the bike in order to hit a certain price point.

What is the difference between a cheap and expensive bicycle? ›

“Expensive” Bikes Use Higher Quality Components

Cyclists won't be able to replace the shifters or rear mechanicals with quality-made parts without a lot of work. “Expensive” bikes, on the other hand, have a considerable amount of engineering behind them to increase the efficiency and durability of the model.

Are bicycle prices dropping? ›

The boom didn't last. Challenged by pandemic-related supply chain issues, the shops sold all their bikes and had trouble restocking. Now, inventory has caught up, but fewer people need new bikes. So, bicycle makers have been slashing prices to clear out the excess.

How expensive is a really good bike? ›

You'll want to make sure that the used bike originally sold for more than $1500. New bikes above that price point have the best components and therefore the best longevity and value. Bikes made and sold for less than $1000 have the cheapest and most generic parts or are outdated.

What is the price of a $270 bicycle with a 24% markup? ›

3) Multiply 1.24 with $270 = $334.80.

What is the average bike profit margin? ›

Bicycle shops typically have an average gross margin ranging from 35% to 50%. This means that if your bicycle shop is generating $15,000 per month, your gross profit will be approximately 45% x $15,000 = $6,750. Let's elucidate this with an example.

What makes a bike more expensive? ›

One of the most significant differences between cheap and expensive bikes is the frame material. Cheap bikes are typically made of steel, which is strong but heavy. More expensive bikes, on the other hand, are made of lighter materials like aluminum or carbon fiber.

What is the weakest part of a bicycle? ›

#1 – Chain

The chain is arguably your bike's weakest and its most important component, converting your body's raw power into rear-wheel spin. As a result, thorough chain inspection should be priority #1 for any wannabe diagnostician.

Who buys the most bikes? ›

End-User Insight. The men's segment accounted for the largest market share of over 45.7% in 2022. It is also expected to emerge as the fastest-growing segment over the forecast period as the number of men riding bicycles continues to be higher than the number of women and kids.

What should my budget be for a bike? ›

Those shopping for their first bike or unsure about their commitment to the sport can certainly find a passable model for under $1,000. But if you plan to tackle anything but rolling gravel and smooth singletrack, we recommend starting your search around the $1,000 mark.

Which bike will run faster? ›

You'll typically go faster on a road bike with a drop handlebar and skinny tyres than on a flat-bar hybrid bike with chunky tyres or a mountain bike designed for riding off-road.

What bike material is expensive? ›

Your budget: Budget is often the biggest factor in choosing a bike and consequently its material. As a generalisation, in order of most expensive to least expensive, titanium takes the cake, followed by carbon fibre, aluminium and steel.

Are lighter bikes more expensive? ›

The weight difference is only one or two pounds. You're paying over 130% more, to save about 5% of the total weight. This could be seen as the "tyranny of the bike equation." As bike weight decreases, the cost of increases exponentially.

Why is it so hard to buy a bike? ›

The explanation for this isn't very convoluted or complex, I think. In 2020, as the pandemic sent everyone home, the demand for bikes and bike stuff exploded. Due to factory shutdowns pretty much everywhere, that demand could not be supplied. In 2021 and 2022, as things eased, the industry boomed.

Is it OK to buy expensive bike? ›

Cheap bikes often have lower-quality components that can wear out quickly or fail to work properly. More expensive bikes, on the other hand, come with high-quality components that are built to last and perform at a high level. This means that you'll have a smoother and more reliable ride on an expensive bike.

Why are motorcycles getting more expensive? ›

The high prices of used bikes were also influenced by the shortage in supply of new bikes, greater competition between brands, and the constant race to introduce the latest motorcycle technology. All these factors resulted in expensive used bikes, leaving buyers with limited options.

Do bikes increase in value? ›

Increases value:

Less than 3-5 years old - Depreciation only gets worse with age. If you're trying to get more money back for your bike, the sooner you sell the better.
