Will high-octane gas hurt my motorcycle? ›

Typically, you can, as long as the octane number is not too high; however, if the octane number is too high, the engine will usually overheat and its performance will suffer, especially because high octane gasoline has a knock resistance feature that prevents it from igniting easily before the timing is correct.

The 90+ octane gasoline is fuel meant for motorbikes that have excellent performance. It is what they refer to as premium fuel. These bikes have a higher compression ratio, and so they need Octane rated 90+ for them to function well. Of all the fuel types, the ones with 90+ Octane are the best.

No Vehicles Need 89-Octane Fuel

Only a handful of modern vehicles — all from Stellantis brands — call for 89-octane gas. Even then, it's not required, only recommended. Using 87-octane fuel in any of them won't harm the powertrain.

Fuel grade needs to match an engine's state of tune. If your bike calls for regular, then there's no need to fill up with higher octane fuel unless you've modified your engine in a way that makes detonation more likely, such as installing a high-compression piston.
