Last week, Jollibee Foods Corporation announced that a major IT system change it undertook was to blame for the lack of the popular “Chickenjoy” in some of its stores. The change affected the fastfood giant's inventory and delivery system, forcing 72 of its stores to close.
After studying the brand, the Jollibee founder realized the edge was in appealing to the Filipino's taste for sweet and savory foods, rather than trying to create a desire for purely “American” food. “Our [food] tends to be sweeter, more spices, more salty,” Caktiong told Forbes Asia in a 2013 story.

It has a softer breading, that's not shatteringly crispy like Popeyes' chicken. However, there's purportedly a "secret marinade" that the chicken bathes in before frying that adds major flavor.
3 billion, Jollibee, the highest valued restaurant brand in the Philippines, further moved up to rank 2 in this year's list from rank 4 of last year. Jollibee was also ranked fifth in the 2024 Top 10 Strongest Filipino Brands, with a brand strength rating improvement from AA- to AAA.
Mariano said Jollibee is notorious for a practice in the fast food industry known as misclassification, where workers are retained as part-time staff indefinitely despite usually working close to full-time shifts. The practice allows an employer to avoid granting staff benefits such as paid leave and full-time wages.
