World Best Selling Motorcycles brands rankingin 2023 dominated by Honda. There are three Indian manufacturers in the Top 5 and four Chinese in the top 10.
For the first time we decided to share the ranking of the Top 10 Brands in the World. Please be aware data includes only 2/3 wheeler in the scooter, underbone, moped and motorcycles category. This mean that Tuk Tuk are not included and ATV/RUV or kick scooter neither.
During the 2023, the global motorcycles industry (including moped, scooter, motorcycles, underbone) have recovered reporting 62.5 million sales, up 2.6%, although the sudden fall reported for the electric segment.
Looking at the combined sales data in the 92 country for which we collect new 2-wheeler registrations, the Top 10 brands ranking reports few changes from the previous year with 2 chinese makers as protagonist, one in a bad destiny and one in a good.
However, starting from the top, the leader, as in the last 50 years is Honda.
Not a surprise, of course. It is almost well known that the Japanese manufacturer dominates the industry with around one third of the industry in its hands.
In 2023, Honda sold 18.4 million two wheeler globally (+4.3%) near 0.7 million more than in the previous year.
The second place the Indian Hero Motor confirmed the position thanks to 5.6 million sales (+5.4%) obtained for the most in India.
Indeall must be considered a temporary trouble as the manufacturer is leader in the electric vehicles R&D and manufacturing and will be back on growing track already in the second half.
In third place there is Yamahawith 4.6 million (+0.9%). Yamaha market share at 7.5% is 5 points below the 2012 achievement.
In fourth place the indian Bajaj Auto with 3.6 million sales (+8.7%) thanks to the strong domestic performance.
In fifth place one the fastest growing indian OEM, TVS Motor, which sold 3.4 million (+19.8%).
Losing 3 spot from the previous year, Yadea, the EVs specialist, is in deep difficulties. Selling 2.5 million EVs in 2023 it reported a 49.7% fall from the previous year.
In seventh place there is a fast recoveringSuzuki with 1.9 million sales (+7.1%).
Behind three Chinese giants, Haojue, Loncin and Zongshen.

European Motorcycles Industry Trend and Perspectives
Considering all the region (38 countries), in 2023 sales have been 2.56 million, up a roaring 24.2%. Looking at the competitive arena, the market leader is Honda with sales up 40.9%, followed by Yamaha (+12.8%), Piaggio (+1.2%), Kuba (+154.1%) and BMW (+5.6%).
In 2022 Motorcycles and cycles were the world's 112th most traded product (out of 1,218). In 2022, the top exporters of Motorcycles and cycles were China ($11.6B), Germany ($3.36B), Japan ($3.25B), Thailand ($3.12B), and India ($2.89B).
The future of motorcycle propulsion will be varied
It is expected that there will be a massive switch to electric motorcycle technology for urban mobility and short distance commuting. Meanwhile, we should not be surprised to see the superbike category continue to rely on internal combustion engines.
The market is pulled ahead by the strong momentum in India, the largest market, which ended the Q1 up a huge +20.6% (and further increased in April) and is growing in Europe, Latin America, North America and Pacific. However, it is sharply declining in China and losses in single digit in the ASEAN.
Honda still leads the world in overall motorcycle sales on every (inhabited) continent, followed by Yamaha with their 20+ worldwide subsidiaries, but here in the States, Harley led all challengers with a 22.1% growth in sales.

Looking at top manufacturer's performance, Honda has taken back the leadership as in 2023 with sales up 3.7%. In second place BMW is near (+2.5%) followed by Piaggio, third with sales down 0.5%. In 4th place Yamaha (+13.2%) ahead of Kawasaki (+10.3%), KTM (+13.8%) and Aprilia (+5.8%).
Hero leads sales and there's no shaking off the world's largest two-wheeler maker from the top. Hero MotoCorp registered sales of 4,45,838 units in May 2024 as compared to 5,31,037 units in May 2023, witnessing a drop in sales. For Hero, the Splendor remains the top-seller and the best-selling two-wheeler in India.
Sales: In terms of pure sales numbers, the clear winner is the Honda SuperCub. With over 100 million units sold since its 1958 debut, it's the best-selling motorcycle ever made. Its reliability, affordability, and ease of use have made it a global phenomenon.
Exports In 2022 the top exporters of Bicycles were China ($3.83B), Chinese Taipei ($1.76B), Germany ($950M), Cambodia ($915M), and Netherlands ($690M). Imports In 2022 the top importers of Bicycles were United States ($2.09B), Germany ($1.29B), Netherlands ($821M), Japan ($690M), and France ($582M).
The global motorcycle market size was valued at USD 79.57 billion in 2023 and is projected to grow from USD 84.00 billion in 2024 to USD 140.38 billion by 2032, exhibiting a CAGR of 6.6% during the forecast period. Asia-Pacific dominated the motorcycle industry with a market share of 62.20% in 2023.
The Motorcycles market in India is projected to reach a revenue of US$32.11bn by 2024. It is expected to show an annual growth rate of 4.24% (CAGR 2024-2029), resulting in a projected market volume of US$39.52bn by 2029.
The global bicycle market size was valued at USD 64.63 billion in 2022 and is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.7% from 2023 to 2030.
Looking at the macro picture, total new motorcycle sales in the United States were down 5.4% in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the first three months of 2023, according to the quarterly report from the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC).
