Does CHEP buy their pallets back? ›

We own every blue CHEP pallet you see. No exceptions. So, it's illegal to buy, sell, exchange, trade or discard CHEP pallets. If you find one, you can't sell it, but you can help us collect it.

CHEP primarily generates its revenue from: An issue fee – the customer gets charged a one-off fee per pallet of around 68 cents (AUD) A daily hire fee for each day the customers uses the pallet – around $5 – $7 a month. This generates ~95% of total revenue.

Current shortages have been caused by: A lack of timber resources to make new pallets (a recent court decision banned logging in key parts of Gippsland, which has had a 'knock on' effect for pallet suppliers) An imbalance global supply chain.

Costco accepts block pallets from iGPS, CHEP, and PECO. All others require advance approval on a case-by-case basis.

Pallet sizes will always play a major role in determining the sellback value of your used pallet supply, and the general rule here is that standard sizes like 48×40 and 48×45 will have higher sellback values as compared to custom sized pallets that are less useful for other businesses.

Increasing demand, decreasing supply

The easiest explanation: the demand for wood has increased, but the supply has decreased. The demand for wooden pallets is increasing. In 2021, 101.3 million EPAL wooden europallets were newly produced, with a total number of repaired and produced pallets of 123.5 million.

Pallets with an MB stamp have been treated with a highly toxic pesticide which can be necessary in certain regions of the world where there are pests that can't be eliminated by heat treatments.

Bigger companies like Home Depot, Lowe's, and Walmart likely return, recycle, and reuse the pallets either through internal logistics teams or with the aid of third-party companies. It certainly won't hurt to ask to store manager, but don't get your hopes up about the big businesses.

Blue pallets are legally owned the CHEP company and should be returned directly to them either through the company they were obtained from or to CHEP directly.

Our pallets are designed, tested and continuously improved at our CHEP Innovation Centre to ensure everything is produced to a high quality. When a CHEP pallet arrives at one of our 240 service centers, it undergoes a rigorous process of inspection and, if necessary, repair, before being reused.
