Costco Display Guidelines & Requirements

Costco merchandises pre-packed, block pallet displays in the U.S. on 48″ x 40″ CHEP, PECO and iGPS pallets. Outside of the U.S., Costco requires 1,200 mm x 1,000 mm pallets. They expect product to be retail ready with the least amount of extraneous material.

Costco Full Pallet Display Requirements

Other pallet conditions include: Full pallet displays must measure 48” x 40” with no product overhang. Heights must not exceed 58” in store, but be 52” tall or less to double stack in a truck. Pallets must have the capacity to hold up to 2,500 pounds.

Pallets should be 48 by 40 inches, with no product overhang. General use block pallets are required. Stringer pallets are not accepted as general use pallets. Pallets loaded with less than 750 pounds must be able to handle 1500 pounds of bottom layer weight.

The dimensions for standard export pallets is 1200mm×800mm (31.50”×47.24”) and is one of the six approved ISO Pallet sizes. The two most popular pallet sizes used in Asia are the square 1100mm x 1100mm (43.30″ × 43.30″) pallet and the 1200mm x 1000mm (39.37″ × 47.24″) pallet.

Costco requires that suppliers show that traceability exercises were conducted independently at least twice during the year. The system must be able to account for 100% of the product in a 2-hour timeframe.

Pallet height again is not standard, but many trucking companies have a max height you must adhere to. As a general rule, keeping pallets at 72” max is recommended to ensure you're within the required max height allowance for trucking companies.

According to NFPA guideline 34.10. 3.3, idle pallet stacks should not exceed 15 feet in height. Taller stacks are slower and less safe to move, requiring a forklift to make them shorter. Form a strong base.

The standard pallet size is 48"x40" with each deck board being 3 1/2" wide by 5/16" thick. Other pallet sizes may differ across industries, but the pallet described above, based on GMA standards, is the most common and makes up more than 30% of all pallets used in the United States.

What is pallet display? ›

A pallet display is a full-size pallet that displays a product and also functions as a shipping container. These sturdy displays are made of corrugated material and can be useful in helping sell your product in a retail environment if they are created effectively.

A standard 40ft High Cube shipping container typically accommodates 21 to 24 pallets (based on the standard pallet size of 48” x 40“), depending on how they are positioned inside.

Pallets must be positioned in a stable manner to avoid collapse or sliding when stacking goods on it. Avoid keeping stacked pallets in high traffic areas. Stack pallets up to 15 feet high, however, this will depend on the type of goods you stored on them. Do not stack products only on one side of the pallet.

What Are FDA Approved Pallets? An FDA pallet is usually blue, although they can also come in black, gray, red, green, yellow and beige, and must be made using virgin plastic resin. No recycled plastic can be used due to the possibility of contaminating the food chain with unknown chemicals or solvents.

Each pallet pile should be separated from other pallet piles by at least 8 feet of clear space or 25 feet of commodity. There's also the option of constructing a specialized storage room within your facility that's sprinklered and has 3 hour-rated firewalls.
